Welcome To College

In college, the structure goes away. The learning pyramid is completely turned upside down. You do about 20% of your learning in class and about 80% of your learning out of class. In fact, it is not unusually for half your grade to occur during the last month of the semester.

Academic Problems

Adjusting to college life is often difficult. The transition is filled not just with new academic challenges, but new social challenges as well. College work require a different skill set for students transitioning from high school.

Time Management

High School students transitioning to college can quickly become very busy and overwhelmed. Managing schedules, classwork, extracurricular activities, and a social life, can be a daunting task.

Classroom Skills

To get the most out of your time in the classroom, college students need to learn ‘active learning’ and ‘cooperative learning’ skills to excel in the classroom.

Study Skills

Learning how to effectively study is one of the most difficult skills to learn when a student first enters college. Study habits learned while in high school often don’t translate well into a college setting.

Managing Stress

In its annual survey of students, the American College Health Association found 62 percent of undergraduates reported “overwhelming anxiety” in the previous year.

I am Dennis Stemmle, college professor, bestselling author, parent of a college student, and founder of College Success Academy. As a college professor, I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly, when it comes to student performance.

I never knew how big our education problem was until my son became one of those dreaded statistics mentioned earlier.
As a top performing high school student, he got into all his desired colleges, and we just never were worried about him performing well. However, his excitement from his college acceptances, the prospects of moving out of the house, and his embracing his independence, quickly led to frustration, stress, and surprise struggles.

Academic Skills

In college, students are expected to learn independently; this means taking responsibility for your own study. Many of the academic skills you are expected to use in college will be new to you.

Strategy

College is an entirely different education system and thus requires a completely different approach for student success. The key to becoming a successful college student isn’t about studying harder, but learning to approach things smarter.

Resources

On most college campuses there is an entire network of resources there that can help you with everything from your writing to finding your passions and interests, but you will likely find your time with your academic advisor limited.

Wellness

About one-third of U.S. college students had difficulty functioning in the last 12 months due to depression, and over 60% said they felt overwhelming anxiety in the last year. Wellness needs to be a key focus for all students.
